Do You Know What To Do In A Fire Emergency?

How confident are you that your employees will know what to do in the event of a fire?
Do they understand the different types of combustibles and the hazards involved with incipient stage fires?
Are they familiar with the different extinguishing agents and how to effectively operate a fire extinguisher?

Fire extinguishers are the first line of defence in fighting small fires. Most of the time, small fires can be extinguished before the activation of automatic sprinkler systems, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in clean up costs and lost revenue.
Unfortunately, most people are caught unprepared when a fire occurs. We can help!

Fire Extinguisher Training

  • Location: your premises.
  • Practical fire training
  • Certificate of attendance issued
  • This training includes both theory and a practical component to ensure that staff can safely attend to small workplace fires.

What The Training Covers:

  • Raising the alarm
  • Fire safety & evacuation
  • Identifying different fire classes
  • Fire triangle theory
  • Types of fire extinguishers and how to use them
  • Safety procedures when fighting fires
  • Firefighting tactics
  • Using a fire blanket
  • Practical session: safely using a fire extinguisher to extinguish a controlled fire.

Emergency Evacuation Diagrams

The biggest tool in your emergency planning toolbox is a well-crafted emergency evacuation diagram. Evacuation diagrams need to be simple, easy to read, and clearly show building occupants where they currently are in the building and how to get to safety quickly and easily.
They should also show an alternative safe exit in case the nearest exit is not able to be accessed.

At Flame Control we create Emergency Evacuation Diagrams that not only meet all Australian fire safety compliance requirements, but are simple, easy to read, and are in fact, National Best Practice.

Contact us today and we can talk you through the process of creating diagrams specifically designed for your sites. Once we have drafts of your new evacuation diagrams, we will forward them to you for review.

Each diagram will include:

  • Clear concise information on evacuation procedures.
  • Highlighted “You Are Here” notifications for each diagram.
  • The location of your nearest Emergency Exit and the clearest path to get there.
  • An alternative pathway to the next closest Emergency Exit (in case the nearest pathway becomes inaccessible).
  • The location of all Fire Equipment (Fire Hose Reels, Fire Blankets and Extinguishers).
  • Details of all Assembly Areas.
  • Emergency Contact information.

Replacement Evacuation Diagrams

Did you know that to meet Australian Standard AS 3745-2010: Planning for Emergencies in Facilities, it is compulsory to replace diagrams every five years? Any changes to a building’s layout, design or its Fire Safety and Emergency Management Plan will also require evacuation diagrams to be updated and replaced.

What does this mean for you:

  • If you alter the structure of your building (tear down walls or add to the building) all your Emergency Evacuation Diagrams need to be changed to reflect that work.
  • If a Fire Safety Audit recommends changes of any kind, then your Fire Safety & Emergency Management Plan needs to reflect what you’ve done in relation to those recommendations.

Evacuation Diagram Review

At Flame Control we strongly recommend an annual review of your Emergency Evacuation Diagrams (and your Emergency Management Plan).
Our Guides will happily review your existing diagrams by ensuring they:

  • Are oriented correctly and include an accurate “You Are Here” designation.
  • Clearly identify the nearest emergency exit and the path to get there.
  • Are in appropriate and ideal locations throughout the building.
  • Contain all mandated compliance requirements.

Vehicle Fire Supression Systems

Vehicle fire suppression systems can detect and suppress fires before they have a chance to do severe damage to your equipment. These systems protect the operator from severe or fatal injuries, prevent downtime and save equipment.

When you combine heat, flammable liquids, turbo chargers, exhaust fumes, electrical components and brakes in the enclosed space of an engine compartment, the potential risk of a fast and furious fire is high.

A vehicle accident or even a simple incident such as a burst hydraulic hose or faulty fittings in an engine compartment can have devastating consequences. Flame Control offers a comprehensive range of Vehicle Fire Suppression Systems to help defend against the threat of vehicle fire.

What Is A Fire Supression System?

A fire suppression system has three functions: efficient detection of a fire, appropriate reaction to the size and type of fire, and effective application of an agent to suppress and extinguish the fire.

A fire suppression system is an engineered system that includes built-in components that detect fires. They’re used to prevent fires in plant equipment or buildings. These systems may combine dry chemicals, inert gases and water and foam solutions to suppress fires.

Suppression systems offer a wide range of protection levels which are not found with traditional fire sprinkler systems.

Brisbane Fire Safety Equipment

5 Types Of Fire Supression Systems:

1. Environmentally friendly Foam Deluge System
For chemical or fuel fires where using water would be hazardous. A foam/water mix provides blanket cover.

2. Dry chemical
Releases a dry chemical powder to extinguish the fire. Often used in overhead applications to protect large areas with multiple and varying obstacles .

3. Water Mist Systems
Improves traditional water sprinkler systems by producing ultra-fine water droplets. Used typically in closed areas to control Class C gas fires or high flow nozzles typically used to protect oil filled high voltage transformers.

4. Gaseous systems also known as “Clean Agent” systems
Typically used in computer and switch rooms with sensitive equipment that may be ruined by water. They reduce oxygen levels to smother or react chemically to break the combustion chain reaction.

5. Early warning detection systems
Uses infrared technology or air sampling systems most typically in sensitive areas to allow early, targeted action, such as shutting down the power to the area and the subsequent controlled discharge of the agent.

Fire And Smoke Doors

A fire and smoke door (which is also known as a passive fire protection) is built into the structure of the building to help prevent the spread of fire. When a building is designed, an architect will arrange the building on the basis of different types of compartments.

Compartmentalisation is the most common form of passive fire protection. The idea is to divide a structure into “fire compartments”, which may contain single or multiple rooms, for the purpose of limiting the spread of fire, smoke and gases to other parts of a building.
You will find the use of fire doors in most buildings.

There are generally two different types of fire doors used:

  • Sole Occupancy Unit Fire Rating Level -/60/30:
This type of fire door is a one hour rated fire door.
  • Common Property Fire Door -/120/30:
This type of fire door is a two hour rated fire door

The above numbers refer to the following:

  • Structural adequacy – How long the structure will support the load and remain vertical.
  • Integrity – How long the structure will inhibit flames.
  • Insulation – how long the structure will not increase in temperature.

Fire Door Inspections

The Building Code of Australia and local council legislation requires that fire doors be inspected and tested at the following intervals:

  • 6 Monthly – Common Property Fire Doors
  • Annual – Common Property Fire doors and Sole Occupancy Unit Fire Doors

For a fire door to be certified as being a fire door the following is required:

  • Fire Rated Frame
  • Approved Fire Rated Hardware
  • Fire Rated Automatic Door Closer
  • One Hour or Two Hour fire rated door certified according to the Australian Standards AS1905 and having the correct fire rating level.

Emergency/Exit Lighting And When It’s Needed

Ever wondered why you need to do 6 monthly emergency lighting service and maintenance check?
You may think that emergency lighting is only used “one” day in case of a fire and that it is not being used at any other time. Ths is generally not the case, below we discuss the different scenarios in which exit lighting is imperative to the safety of guests on your premises.

Emergency Lighting Use Cases

There are different types of emergency lighting systems and they are designed to work in different situations.

Fire
Emergency/Exit lights are being used during a fire to assist people to exit the building quickly and safely. When there is a fire it can be smoky and it might be hard to see.
The emergency/exit lights will show you where the nearest fire exit is.
If the power cuts out the emergency light will illuminate to make it easier to see all the exits. It is vital that all staff know where the fire exits are,  they also need to familiarise themselves with emergency exit routes and evacuation assembly areas.
Emergency /Exit lights can save lives during a fire.

Power Outage
During a power outage the Emergency system activates by illuminating the emergency/exit lights. It is powered by a battery. Staff can use them to navigate to an exit. In a big building this is especially crucial.

Evacuation
The emergency lights can also be activated if an emergency evacuation is necessary. Evacuation procedures may happen due to emergency, bomb threats or natural disasters.
Exit lights are always on and are illuminated through the mains power, if the power fails the battery system will kick in.

Emergency/ Exit Light Inspections

At Flame Control our testing are done by a licensed electrician.
If there is any defect, with the customer consent, we can fix your exit and emergency lights. This makes sure they are safe and effectively working during an evacuation.

Emergency lights need to be tested and maintained regularly.
A 6 monthly inspection is the prescribed period for business premises.
At Flame Control Fire Protection, we test and inspect lights according to the AS 2293.2 Australian Standard.

We can set up a regular 6 monthly service and maintenance check.
If you are a building owner, you need to make sure your emergency and exit lighting systems are installed in accordance with the Building Code of Australia.
If you have any questions about emergency or exit lighting, contact us today.

Fire Pump Sets

Fire Pump Sets

Fire pump sets are usually needed when the local water system cannot provide adequate pressure to meet the design’s hydraulic requirements of the fire sprinkler system.
This commonly occurs in multi-story buildings or systems that require a relatively high terminal pressure at the fire sprinkler in order to release a large volume of water such as storage warehouses. Fire pumps are also needed if the water supply is provided from the ground or underground level water storage tank.

A pump using an electric motor must be connected to a transfer switch that directs power to an emergency generator. This is to anticipate a power failure that will likely happen in the occurrence of a fire outbreak.

To ensure that the fire pump can provide sufficient water flow and pressure to the fire sprinkler piping system, it must undergo frequent operating tests and preventive maintenance. A reliable and operational pump is critical in the event of a fire.

Fire Pump Servicing

An annual performance test must be conducted by qualified personnel for all fire pumps. A record of the pump suction pressure, discharge pressure, revolutions per minute and driver electrical voltage/current must be kept for no-flow condition, rated flow and 150% rated flow.

The installation, field acceptance test, annual performance test, and basic fire pump operation should all be done in accordance with the Australian Fire Safety Standards.
Call Flame Control Industries to schedule your annual service.

What Sprinkler Systems Do

These systems are required to automatically deliver pressurised water through pipeworks in order to assist during the event of a fire.

Each Sprinkler “head” has a colour coded heat sensitive bulb that will break at a predetermined temperature and allow the flow of water over the diffuser so that the water is dispersed in the most appropriate spray pattern for the designated coverage area.

Depending on the design and requirements for specific hazards, and installation premises, the following key components are required:

  • A reliable and consistent water supply
  • Control valve assembly and pipework
  • Sprinkler heads to suit the hazard and conditions of the premises
  • Pump/s to ensure correct pressure and system required water flow rates.

Fire Sprinklers Service & Maintenance

These Systems require a minimum Inspection and Test regime as per Australian Standard AS1851 and AS2118 of the following frequencies:

  • Monthly
  • Six Monthly
  • Annual
  • Five Yearly
  • Ten Yearly
  • Twenty-Five and Thirty Yearly

Fire Hydrant Systems

Fire hydrant pump systems (also known as fire pumps, hydrant boosters and fire water pumps) provide the most effective means of manual fire suppression when controlled by Fire Brigade personnel.

Availability of fire hydrants is essential to fire protection. Fire hydrants may be used to control the spread of a fire, protect neighbouring properties and extinguish an outbreak of fires.
The fire hydrant systems are access points that allow fire authorities to connect hoses and quickly disperse large amounts of water to extinguish flames.
Fire Hydrant systems need to be regularly inspected, tested and maintained to ensure immediate readiness for use.

Fire Hose Reels

Hose reels are essentail pieces of firec equipment for larger areas and are usually attached to the building. Although it’s not really portable, the hose can be pulled out to roughly 36 metres,  it has a constant stream of water and a water jet of approximately 7 metres long to help you fight any combustible fire.

Always remember, due to it using water it is not to be used on electrical fires. Your scheduled 6 monthly service will check your fire hose reels and every 12 months an active flow test is required.

Fire Blankets

Fire blankets are great for throwing on that burning pot or if you are really confident in using them you can use them on a fat fire and the best thing is there nothing to clean up except the blanket itself.

A fibreglass woven mesh blanket can also be used to wrap yourself up in if you find the need to escape a fire. Just make sure the blanket is big enough to cover your whole body.

Flame Control  Industries can arrange on-site training for the use of fire extinguishers, hose reels and fire blankets.
